Welcome to Mizizi Apothecary
We are a Community Based Organization (CBO) in rural Kenya treating patients with an emphasis on herbal medicine. Our prayer is that healthcare would be accessible to all people. For this to happen in poor and remote parts of the world, sustainable methods for healthy living are a must. Join us, as we seek to expand our care and understanding of wellness to benefit people from every walk of life.
Mizizi is an extension of the Waweza Movement, a U.S. based nonprofit that cares for vulnerable groups in rural Kenya, with several outreach projects geared towards the poor, orphaned, and widowed.
Vision and Objectives
At Mizizi, our vision is to provide highly accessible care that is sourced through long term, sustainable operations.
Like our vision, our objectives are two-fold.
1. Make holistic (herbal) medicine available to all
2. Educate people and ourselves - preserve the wealth of knowledge passed down through countless generations and empower individuals to practice healthy living on a daily basis.
Why Mizizi?
Mizizi in Swahili means roots.
We wanted a name that celebrates the tradition of herbal medicine. From the beginning of time, health and wellness has always started in one place- the earth. Kenyans from all tribes have a rich oral tradition of medicine with practitioners referred to as 'medicine men', 'midwives', 'healers'… the list goes on and on.
As the world of healthcare evolves, we can depend on very little to remain unchanged. But one constant is the universal need for care. The others, we're finding, are the plants that have inhabited this place even longer than its people. We're looking back to the literal roots of medicine and seeking to treat and empower patients as we go.
